Cylinder head bolts: to replace or not to replace?
What is the function of the cylinder head bolts?
Basically, the function is to attach the cylinder head to the vehicle's engine block and this requires a lot of precision in order to prevent water, oil and compression leaks.
When replacing and/or repairing the cylinder head, should the screws be changed?
Yes, reusing bolts when replacing and/or repairing the cylinder head can cause problems for your vehicle. As the bolts are tightened during initial assembly, they will naturally stretch over their useful life.
Replacement is then recommended to maintain the correct seating between the cylinder head and the engine block.
Types of cylinder head screws!
There are basically two types of screws used to fix the heads.
-
Elastic zone screws
Under these conditions, the material can be compared to an elastic band, as it stretches when tensile force is applied and returns to its initial conditions after stretching is stopped. -
Plastic zone screws
Under these conditions, the material can be compared to plastic, which stretches when tensile force is applied and does not return to its initial conditions after stretching is stopped.
Precautions to be taken!
* Poorly tightened screws, whether due to torque or angle, can cause the cylinder head to warp, as well as the gasket and engine to become loose.
- Overtightening the bolts can damage the block, warp the cylinder liners, and cause compression loss. It can also cause oil burns or even break the bolt during operation. Always pay attention to the manufacturer's technical specifications when repairing your engine.
