Introduction

When it comes to the cylinder head, we can't ignore the valve train. This part plays a fundamental role in the functioning of the cylinder head and your vehicle's engine as a whole. It controls the valves, which, in turn, allow fuel to enter, generating enough force to move the car.

Its function is to control the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves, which will dictate the rhythm, performance, cylinder rotation and fuel combustion.

To perform all these functions accurately on the different types of cylinder heads that exist, three different valve control models were developed. 

Camshaft types

• SOHC (Single Over Head Camshaft) valve train

The engine has only one shaft. It is solely responsible for opening and closing the intake and exhaust valves. It's typically found in popular car engines, which use only two valves per cylinder. 

• DOHC (Dual Overhead Camshaft) valve train

It uses two shafts to control the valves. Unlike a single-cam, it's typically found in vehicles with four valves per cylinder. Thus, one shaft controls the intake valves, while the other controls the exhaust valves.

• OHV (Overhead Valve) valve control

A system not as popular today, it was used in older cars. Engines with this type of distribution have the camshaft installed in the engine block rather than the cylinder head. 

Some Recommendations 

As this is a very important part for your engine, we recommend that you replace the valve control with a new one as soon as you replace the cylinder head.

Because it is a metal part that works in constant movement, friction occurs between the control and other parts, causing wear and damage, which can damage your vehicle's engine.

This wear on the valve train can occur for two reasons. The first is engine overheating, and the second is a lack of oil, which ultimately results in damage to the train.

Therefore, always perform preventive maintenance on your engine and avoid greater risks, as well as losses to your pocket!
