How does the engine oil dipstick work and why is it so important?

The engine oil dipstick is a simple yet essential part for the proper functioning of your vehicle. It measures the level and condition of the lubricating oil, which protects the engine's internal components from wear. Without proper lubrication, the engine can overheat, seize, and suffer serious damage.

Where is the oil dipstick?

The oil dipstick is located near the engine, usually with a brightly colored handle, such as yellow or orange, for easy viewing and handling. It is a long, thin metal rod with markings on the tip that indicate the minimum and maximum level of oil.

How to use the oil dipstick: step by step

  1. Turn off the engine and wait a few minutes.
Wait for the engine to cool slightly. This allows the oil to drain completely into the sump, allowing for a more accurate measurement.
  2. Carefully remove the dipstick.
Pull the rod all the way out and wipe the tip with a clean cloth or paper.
  3. Reinsert the dipstick fully.
After cleaning, put the rod back in place until it stops.
  4. Remove it again and check the level.
Observe the oil level and compare it to the minimum and maximum marks. The ideal level is between these two marks.

Also check the quality of the oil

In addition to the level, the dipstick also helps identify whether the oil is in good condition.

  • Clean oil has a light, yellowish or slightly golden color.
  • Dirty oil becomes dark, thick or has residue — a sign that it is close to time for a change.

Why measure oil frequently?

Checking your oil regularly is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent engine problems, such as overheating, excessive wear, and mechanical failures. An engine with the right oil level and in good condition runs better, consumes less fuel, and lasts longer.
